Our Privacy Commitment

Privacy is our top priority at HoverNotes. We believe in local-first storage and minimal data collection. This policy explains how we handle your data when using our Chrome extension. For information about your rights and responsibilities while using our service, please see our Terms of Service.

Information We Handle

• Notes and screenshots you create using the extension are stored locally on your computer
• Temporary processing of video content for AI-powered features, with no data retained after processing is complete
• For account creation, we collect only essential personal information:
  • Email address (for authentication and account management)
• We retain limited service-usage records, such as account and subscription identifiers, processing job identifiers, timestamps, successfully processed video duration, completion or failure status, and technical diagnostics
• We don't track your browsing activity or browser history - URLs are only saved within your notes for reference purposes

Local-First Storage

• All notes and screenshots are stored locally on your computer
• Your data is saved directly to your Obsidian vault
• You maintain complete control over your local data

AI Processing & Security

• When using AI features, video content is temporarily sent to our secure servers for processing
• Video payloads and generated note content are not retained after processing is complete
• Limited operational metadata is retained to operate and improve the service, provide support, maintain security, prevent abuse, administer subscriptions, and verify billing and refund requests
• Processed notes are immediately returned and stored only in your local vault
• Operational records are retained only for as long as reasonably necessary for these purposes and applicable legal, accounting, and dispute-resolution requirements

Browser Permissions

• activeTab: Required to interact with video content and provide note-taking features
• tabCapture: Enables video content capture for note-taking features
• offscreen: Supports our media processing features
• cookies: Used for secure authentication with our services
• storage: Manages your preferences and settings
• contextMenus: Provides quick access to features
• clipboardWrite: Enables integration with Obsidian
• alarms: Manages extension maintenance tasks

All permissions are used solely for core functionality and operate with minimal access requirements. We never use these permissions for tracking or data collection.

Your Data Control

• Full access to your notes and screenshots
• Complete control to edit or delete your data at any time through your Obsidian vault directly
• Free to export or transfer your data at any time
