Privacy is our top priority at HoverNotes. We believe in local-first storage and minimal data collection. This policy explains how we handle your data when using our Chrome extension. For information about your rights and responsibilities while using our service, please see our Terms of Service.

Information We Handle

• Notes and screenshots you create using the extension are stored locally on your computer by default, with optional cloud storage if you choose to enable it
• Temporary cloud processing of open notes for AI-powered features, with logs or metadata retained just briefly after the active session
• For account creation, we collect only essential personal information:
  • Email address (for authentication and account management)
• We don't track your browsing activity or browser history - URLs are only saved within your notes for reference purposes

Local-First Storage

• By default, all notes and screenshots are stored locally on your computer
• Your data is saved directly to your Obsidian vault
• You maintain complete control over your local data
• Basic features require no account or subscription

Optional Cloud Storage

• Premium users can opt-in to cloud storage for backup and sync
• Freedom to choose between local-only or cloud storage
• Cloud features may require a premium account

AI Note Generation

• When using AI features, your current note is temporarily sent to our secure servers
• No logs, metadata, or note content are retained after processing is complete
• AI processing data is automatically purged after each session
• Processed notes are immediately returned and stored only in your local vault or cloud storage (if enabled)

Browser Permissions

• activeTab: Required to interact with video content and provide note-taking features
• tabCapture: Enables video content capture for note-taking features
• offscreen: Supports our media processing features
• cookies: Used for secure authentication with our services
• storage: Manages your preferences and settings
• contextMenus: Provides quick access to features
• clipboardWrite: Enables integration with Obsidian
• alarms: Manages extension maintenance tasks

All permissions are used solely for core functionality and operate with minimal access requirements. We never use these permissions for tracking or data collection.

Your Data Control

• Full access to your notes and screenshots
• Complete control to edit or delete your data at any time through:
  • Your Obsidian vault directly
  • Account dashboard (for cloud storage)
• Choose how you want to store your data (local or cloud)
• Free to export or transfer your data at any time
